Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, commonly abbreviated as ALES, is an anionic surfactant and is the ammonium salt of ethoxylated lauryl sulfate. It is a clear to slightly hazy, colorless to pale yellow liquid in form. Ammonium Laureth Sulfate is widely used in cosmetics and personal care formulations as a primary cleansing and foaming agent, where it produces a rich, abundant lather and effectively removes dirt, oil, and impurities from the skin and hair. The ethoxylation process imparts a milder skin compatibility profile compared to non-ethoxylated sulfate surfactants, making it well suited for formulations intended for frequent use. It is commonly found in shampoos, conditioners, body washes, liquid hand soaps, and facial cleansers.
