Polysorbate 20 is a polyoxyethylene derivative of sorbitan monolaurate. It is a pale yellow to amber viscous liquid that is freely soluble in water. It functions primarily as a nonionic emulsifier and solubilizer, and is widely used in cosmetic, personal care, and pharmaceutical formulations including lotions, creams, shampoos, and topical drug products. It is particularly effective for solubilizing essential oils and fragrances into aqueous systems.
