Necessities for Everyone
The personal care industry consists of a wide range of products dedicated to health and beauty, including hair, skin and nail care, sunscreen, cosmetics, toothpaste and perfume. These products are everyday necessities in most societies and they are consumed by all age groups, from young children to the elderly. As populations increase around the world, so does demand for personal care products. What’s more, such demand tends to be relatively steady even in down economies. The global market for personal care products is estimated to be around $426 billion in 2011 according to Euromonitor and growth rates are quite healthy for the foreseeable future.
KGI serves most segments of the personal care industry with a particular focus on hair and skin care. Our chemicals division offer a wide range of surfactants and blends for making soaps, body washes and shampoos and we provide the technical support to help customers optimize their formulations from the standpoint of cost, appearance and performance. We also offer many oleochemicals, mineral oils and specialty additives, as well as colorants and fragrances to help make your products stand out in the marketplace. And, if you are seeking to eliminate certain chemicals from your formulations, such as sulfates, parabens, petrochemicals or cocamide diethanolamine, our GreenLab team can assist you with suitable replacements. Conversely, our packaging division offers many solutions for the industry, including dispensing caps, lotion pumps and fine mist sprayers, not to mention containers and jars in both plastic and glass. Our GreenLab can also help make your packaging more environmentally sustainable, including with containers made from recycled content.

California’s Prop 65 Identifies Cocamide Diethanolamine as a Carcinogen
KGI Offers Multiple Replacements
In June 2012, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment added cocamide diethanolamine (cocamide DEA) to the California Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to cause cancer in humans. If a personal care product containing a Prop 65 chemical is sold in California, the product label must contain a Toxicity Warning to be in compliance with California. In August 2013, the Center for Environmental Health, a nonprofit, sued over 100 personal care product companies for failing to warn the public that their products contained a known carcinogen. In response to the lawsuit, many of these companies have already settled and pledged to eliminate cocamide DEA from their formulations. Since California historically has been a bellwether state, we believe that similar national regulations concerning cocamide DEA are in the pipeline.
Cocamide DEA is a chemically-modified form of coconut oil that has long been used as a foaming agent or viscosity builder in many personal care products like shampoos and hand soaps. KGI offers several cocamide DEA replacements that will perform these same functions as good, if not better, than cocamide DEA. If you are looking to eliminate cocamide DEA from your formulations, please contact our GreenLab for more information for suitable replacement products.
