Acetic Acid 
- Occurs naturally in apples, cheese, cocoa, coffee, grapes, skin milk, oranges, peaches, pineapples, strawberries and a variety of other fruits and plants. Vinegar is about 4 to 6 percent acetic acid and essence of vinegar is about 14 percent. It is used in cheese, baked goods and animal feeds. Solvent for gums, resins and volatile oils. Styptic, it stops bleeding when applied to a cut on the skin.
Alcohol Ethoxylate 
- A biodegradable nonionic surfactant made from a plant fatty alcohol (such as lauryl alcohol) and ethylene oxide. Alcohol ethoxylates may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable human carcinogen. However, most companies remove 1,4-dioxane contamination by a process called vacuum stripping.
Alkyl Polyglycoside (APG) 
- A mild, biodegradable nonionic surfactant derived from cornstarch and a plant fatty alcohol (such as lauryl alcohol). Found in: detergents, hand dish soap, all purpose cleaners, and hard surface cleaners.
Almond Oil 
- A flavoring additive from the ripe seed of a small tree grown in Italy, Spain, and France. Colorless or slightly yellow, strong almond odor, and mild taste. Used in cherry and almond flavorings for beverages, ice cream, ices, candy, baked goods, chewing gums, cherries, and gelatin desserts. Used in the manufacture of liqueurs and perfumes.
Aloe Vera 
- A compound expressed from the aloe plant leaf from a South African lilylike plant. Used in bitters, vermouth and spice flavorings for beverages and alcoholic drinks. Also known as a first aid plant. Aloe is employed for its supposed softening benefits in skin creams and used after tanning in the sun.
Amine Oxide 
- A biodegradable surfactant widely used in cleaning and personal care products, usually in conjunction with other surfactants. The major uses are in laundry and cleaning products, where it functions as a foam stabilizer, thickener and emollient, emulsifier, and conditioning agent.
Amylase (Enzyme) 
- A protein that dissolves stains caused by starchy substances.
Ascorbic Acid 
- Vitamin C. A preservative and antioxidant used in frozen fruit, particularly sliced peaches, frozen fish dip, milk, beer and ale, soft drinks, jellies and other food products. Also used as a preservative and antioxidant widely used in cosmetic creams, particularly bleach and lemon creams and soaps, hair dyes and conditioners. Promoted in anti-wrinkle products. Vitamin C is necessary for normal teeth, bones and blood vessels.
Avocado Oil 
- Oil that contains high amounts of Vitamin A, B1, B2, D, and E. Also contains amino acids, sterols, pantothenic acid, lecithin, and other essential fatty acids. Skin problems and other skin ailments have benefited greatly from Avocado Oil. Highly recommended to those with sensitive skin and other irritations that require vitamin rich oil.
Bacteria 
- Harmless bacteria that rapidly digest grease, proteins, and other soils. Ideal for heavy duty grease removal without solvents, and for improving slow drains.
Bees Wax 
- From virgin bees and primarily used as an emulsifier. Used as a candy glaze, polish, found in many cosmetics, including baby creams, hair dressings, cold cream, eye creams, eye shadow and makeup, lipstick, mascara and variety of other beautifying products.
Borax (Sodium Borate) 
- Sodium Borate. A mild alkali found in the Far West, particularly in Death Valley, California. A mineral compound of sodium, boron, oxygen, and water. Used in cold creams, foundation creams, hair color rinses, permanent waves and shaving creams. It is used as a water softener, as a preservative, and as a texturizer in cream products. Also used to prevent irritation of the skin by the antiperspirant aluminum chloride.
Calcium Chloride 
- A salt used to stabilize surfactant performance.
Camphor Oil 
- Japanese White Oil. Camphor Tree. Distilled from trees at least fifty years old grown in China, Japan, Formosa, Brazil, and Sumatra. Camphor tree is used in spice flavorings for beverages, baked goods, and condiments. It is also used in embalming fluid, in the manufacture of explosives, in lacquers, as a moth repellent, and topically in liniments, cold medications, drug preservative, and anesthetics.
Candelilla Wax 
- Obtained from candelilla plants. Brownish to yellow brown, hard, brittle, easily pulverized, partially insoluble in water. Hardens other waxes. Used as a coating for foods. Used in lipsticks, solid fragrances, and liquid powders to give them body. Also used in emollients to protect the skin from moisture loss. Used in the manufacture of rubber, in waterproofing and writing inks.
Caramel 
- Used as a coloring in cosmetics and a soothing ingredient in skin lotions. Burnt sugar with a pleasant, slightly bitter taste. Used in food as a flavoring and coloring.
Carboxymethyl-cellulose (CMC) 
- A water-soluble polymer derived from natural cellulose. It helps keep soil dispersed in the wash water, thereby preventing it from redepositing onto the fabrics being laundered. CMC is biodegraded aerobically and anaerobically by bacteria commonly found in the environment. However, its biodegradation rates range from slow to very slow.
Carnauba Wax 
- The exudate from the leaves of the Brazilian wax palm tree used as a texturizer in foundation makeups, mascara, cream rouge, lipsticks, liquid powders, depilatories, and deodorant sticks. Also, used in the automotive industry and as car wash wax. In comes in a hard, greenish to brownish solid and rarely cause allergic reactions.
Castor Oil 
- Palm Christi Oil. The seed of the castor-oil plant. Used in bath oils, nail polish removers, solid perfumes, face masks, shaving creams, lipsticks, and many men’s hairdressings. It is also used a plasticizer in nail polish. Soothing to the skin. Used in butter and nut flavorings for beverages, ice cream, ices, candy, and baked goods. Also an anti-sticking additive in hard-candy products and a component of protective coatings, drying oil, and releasing additive.
Cedar Leaf Oil 
- Cedar Wood Oil. The oil from white, red, or various cedars obtained by distillation from fresh leaves and branches. A colorless to yellow liquid with a fresh woody scent, it is used in fruit and spice flavorings for beverages, ice cream, ices, candy, baked goods, chewing gum, and liquors. Used frequently as a substitute for oil of lavender. There is usually a strong camphor odor that repels insects. It is often used in perfumes, soaps, and sachets for its warm, woody scent. Cedar oil can be a photosensitizer, causing skin reactions when the skin is exposed to light.
Ceto Stearyl Alcohol 
- Also known as Cetostearyl Alcohol or Cetearyl Alcohol. Emulsifying wax. A mixture chiefly of the fatty alcohols – cetyl and stearyl – and used primarily in ointments as an emulsifier. Very widely used in hair tints, cleansing lotions, skin care preparations such as night skin care creams, shampoos, and makeup.
Cetrimonium Bromide 
- A cationic detergent and antiseptic, disinfectant, and cleansing ingredient in skin-cleaning products and shampoos. It masks or decreases perspiration odors. Powerful quaternary ammonium anti-microbial compound, effective against bacteria.
Cetyl Alcohol 
- An emollient and emulsions stabilizer used in many foods and cosmetics. Cetyl alcohol is waxy, crystalline, and solid found in spermaceti. It has a low toxicity for both skin and ingestion and is sometimes used as a laxative.
Citric Acid 
- One of the most widely used biodegradable acids in the cosmetics industry, it is derived from citrus fruit by fermentation of crude sugars. It is a flavoring for beverages, ice creams, ices, candy, baked goods and chewing gum. Employed in curing meats as a preservative, for firming peppers, tomatoes and other vegetables. For the cosmetic industry, it is found in freckle and nail bleaches, bath preparations, skin fresheners and a variety of hair products. For the cleaning industry, it is a chelating agent (binds metals) used to replace phosphates.
Citrus Oil 
- Oils derived from citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges and grapefruits.
Clove Stem Oil 
- The volatile, yellow to light brown oil obtained by steam distillation from the dried stems of the tropical tree that produces clove buds. Used in berry, cherries, root beer, ice cream, candy, and baked goods.
Cocamide MEA 
- A foam stabilizer made from coconut oil. Although similar to cocamide DEA, it is less likely to form carcinogenic nitrosamines, and so is acceptable for us. Cocamide MEA is a mild eye and skin irritant. Found in: dishwashing liquids, cosmetics, and shampoos.
Cocamidopropyl Betaine 
- A surfactant derived from coconut fatty acids. It does not irritate the skin or mucous membranes. It is used to thicken shampoos, and to reduce the irritation that would result if only more irritating detergents were used.
Cocoa Butter 
- Coating material for vitamins, citric acid, succinic acid and spices. Softens and lubricates the skin. A solid fat from the roasted seeds of the cocoa plant that is used in eyelash creams in lipsticks, nail whiteners, soaps, and emollient creams as a lubricant and skin softener. Frequently used in massage creams and in suppositories because it softens and melts at body temperature.
Coconut Oil 
- The white, semisolid, highly saturated fat expressed from the meat of the coconut. Used in chocolate, candies, in baking, instead of lard, and in self-basting turkeys. Widely used in the manufacture of baby soaps, shampoos, shaving lathers, cuticle removers, pre-shaving lotions, hairdressings, soaps, ointment bases, and massage creams. Stable when exposed to the air. Lathers readily and is a fine skin cleanser.
Coriander Oil 
- The volatile oil from the dried ripe fruit of a plant grown in Asia and Europe. Used as a flavoring ingredient in dentifrices. Colorless or pale liquid with a taste and odor characteristic of coriander, which is also used as a condiment. Used as a flavoring additive in raspberry, bitters, fruit, meat, spice, ginger ale, and vanilla flavors for beverages, ice cream, ices, candy, baked goods, chewing gum, meats, liquors, and condiments.
Corn Starch 
- Many containers are powdered with cornstarch to prevent sticking. It is a demulcent for irritated colons.
d-Glucopyranoside 
- A mild surfactant derived from sugar and a fatty alcohol.
d-Limonene 
- d-Limonene is the major component of the oil extracted from citrus rind. When citrus fruits are juiced, the oil is pressed out of the rind. This oil is separated from the juice, and distilled to recover certain flavor and fragrance compounds. The bulk of the oil is left behind and collected. This is food grade d-Limonene. After the juicing process, the peels are conveyed to a steam extractor. This extracts more of the oil from the peel. When the steam is condensed, a layer of oil floats on the surface of the condensed water. This is technical grade d-Limonene. It is used as a solvent to replace chlorinated hydro carbons and other more volatile and toxic solvents.
Disodium Phosphate 
- A sequestrate used in evaporated milk and macaroni and noodle products. It is used as an emulsifier in specified cheeses. Prevents cooked-out juices in cured hams, pork shoulders and loins, canned hams, chopped hams and bacon. Used as a buffer to adjust acidity in chocolate products, beverages, sauces, and toppings. Effervescent used in manufacture of nail enamels and detergents.
Essential Oils 
- A group of volatile fluids derived primarily from plants, and used in natural products primarily as fragrant additives. Examples are as follow: Citrus, Fir Needle, Lavender, Lemon, Orange, Soybean, Spruce, Tea Tree, and Vanilla Oil(s).
Ethanol 
- A volatile solvent derived from corn. Ethanol is a mild eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritant, and a central nervous system depressant. Found in: detergents, disinfectants, carpet cleaners, tub and tile cleaners, air fresheners.
Ethyl Acetate 
- A colorless liquid with a pleasant fruity odor that occurs naturally in apples, bananas, grape juice, pineapple, raspberries, and strawberries. A very useful solvent in nail enamels and nail polish removers. Also, an artificial fruit essence for perfumes and a synthetic flavoring for a variety of beverages and foods.
Eucalyptus Oil 
- Used in skin fresheners. The colorless to pale yellow, volatile liquid from the fresh leaves of the eucalyptus tree. Used as a local antiseptic. Eucalyptus is used by practitioners to “refresh the nervous system and to treat tiredness, poor concentration and headaches.” Eucalyptus is also used an insect repellent and has protected against wounds, skin infections, herpes, and ulcers. Has a spicy cool taste.
Feldspar 
- Name of a group of rock-forming minerals which make up as much as 60% of the Earth’s crust. Common raw material in the production of ceramics and is an ingredient in household cleaners. It is used as a glazing material.
Ferrous Sulphatel 
- Green or Iron Vitriol. Pale bluish green, odorless crystals, efflorescent in dry air. An astringent and deodorant. Used in hair dyes. A source of iron used medicinally. Iron salts.
Fir Needle Oil 
- The essential oil obtained from fir needles.
Folic Acid 
- A yellowish orange compound and member of the vitamin B complex, used as a nutrient. Occurs naturally in liver, kidney, mushrooms, and green leaves. Aids in cell formation, especially in red bloods cells. Folic acid, when consumed in adequate amounts by women before and during early pregnancy, reduces the risk of birth defects such as spina bifida. Found in enriched breads, flours, cornmeals, pastas, rice and other grain products. Used in cosmetic emollients.
Fuller's Earth 
- Used in dry shampoos, hair colorings, beauty masks, and as a dusting powder; also used for lubricants and soaps. A white or brown, naturally occurring earthy substance. A non-plastic variety of kaolin containing aluminum silicate. Used as an absorbent and to decolorize fats and oils. No longer permitted as a color additive. It is used to keep fish eggs from sticking together in hatcheries.
Glycerin 
- A sweet, warm-tasting substance. Used as a humectant in tobacco and in marshmallows, pastilles, and jellylike candies; as a solvent for colors and flavors; as a bodying additive in combination with gelatins and edible gums; as a plasticizer in edible coatings for meat and cheese. Also, used in beverages, baked goods, chewing gum and meat products. Emollient in many cosmetics, it absorbs moisture from the air, and therefore helps keep moisture in creams and other products, even if the consumer leaves the cap off the container. Also helps the product to spread better.
Grapefruit Seed Extract 
- A natural extract that is a good source of antioxidants and allegedly provides antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. However, recent studies have confirmed that the antibacterial properties of commercially available GSE may originate from synthetic quaternary ammonium compounds added to the grapefruit at relatively high levels.
Guar Gum 
- Guar flour. From ground nutritive seed tissue of plants cultivated in India, it has five to eight the thickening power of starch. A free-flowing powder, it is used as a stabilizer for frozen fruit, icings, glazes, and soft drinks, and as a thickener for hot and cold drinks. Also a binder for meats, confections, baked goods, cheese spreads, cream cheese, ice cream, ices, French dressing and salad dressing. Keeps tablet formulations from disintegrating, and is used in cosmetic emulsions, toothpastes, lotions and creams. Employed also as a bulk laxative, appetite suppressant, and to treat peptic ulcers.
Hydrogen Peroxide 
- A bleaching and disinfectant agent. When used for household disinfectant purposes (3% to 5%), it may be mildly irritating to the skin and mucous membranes.
Jojoba Oil 
- Widely used in cosmetics, it is the oil extracted from the beanlike seeds of the desert shrub Simmondsia chinensis. A liquid wax used as a lubricant and a substitute for sperm oil, carnauba wax, and beeswax. It has long been used as a hair conditioner and skin lubricant. U.S. companies are now promoting the ingredient in shampoos, moisturizers, sunscreens and conditioners as a treatment for wrinkles, stretch marks and dry skin.
Lactic Acid 
- Used to adjust pH, lactic acid is made by fermentation of corn syrup.
Lanolin 
- Wool Fat. Wool Wax. A product of the oil glands of sheep. Used as a chewing-gum base component. Used in lipstick, liquid powder, mascara, nail polish remover, protective oil, rouge, hair conditioners, cold creams, and emollients. A water-absorbing base material and a natural emulsifier, it absorbs and holds water to the skin. Chemically a wax instead of a fat. Advertisers have found that the words "contains lanolin" help to sell a product and have promoted it as being able to "penetrate the skin better than other oils."
Lavender Oil 
- The essential oil obtained from lavender
Lecithin 
- From the Greek, meaning "egg yolk". A natural antioxidant and emollient composed of units of chlorine, phosphoric acid, fatty acids, and glycerin. Commercially isolated from eggs, soybeans, corn, and egg yolks and used as an antioxidant in prepared breakfast cereal, candy, sweet chocolate, bread, rolls, buns, and oleomargarine. Also used in eye creams, lipsticks, liquid powders, hand creams and lotions, soaps, and many other cosmetics. Also a natural emulsifier and spreading additive.
Lemon Oil 
- The essential oils derived from lemon.
Licorice Root 
- A black substance derived from a plant, “sweet root,” cultivated from southern Europe to Central Asia. It is used in fruit, licorice, anise, maple, and root beer for flavorings.
Magnesium Chloride 
- A salt used to stabilize surfactant performance.
Malic Acid 
- A colorless, crystalline compound with a strong acid taste that occurs naturally in a wide variety of fruits, including apples and cherries. A flavoring additive and aid in aging wine. It has a strong acid taste. Used as an alkali in frozen dairy products, beverages, baked goods, confections, fruit butter, and jelly and jam preserves. An alkali and antioxidant in cosmetics and ingredient of hair lacquer.
Methylchloroisothiazolinone
(Kathon CG) 
- A synthetic perervative used in cosmetics an cleaning products. Biodegrade at very low concentrations.
Oleic Acid 
- Obtained from various animal and vegetable fats and oils. Colorless. On exposure to air, it turns a yellow to brown color and develops a rancid color. Used as a defoaming additive; as a synthetic butter, cheese and spice flavoring additive for beverages, ice cream, ices, candy, baked goods and condiments; as a lubricant and binder in various foods; and as a component in the manufacture of food additives. Used in preparations of soft soap, nail polish, toilet soaps, and lipsticks. Possesses better skin penetrating properties than vegetable oils.
Olive Oil 
- Superior to mineral oils in penetrating power. Used in hair dressings, emollients, eyelash oils, shampoos, lipstick, soap and face powders. Has been reported to be beneficial to blood cholesterol.
Orange Oil 
- Yellow to deep orange liquid with a characteristic orange taste and odor expressed from the fresh peel of the ripe fruit of the sweet orange plant species. Used in orange and fruit flavorings for beverages, ice cream, ices, candy, baked goods, gelatin deserts and chewing gum.
Panthenol 
- Vitamin B Complex Factor. A viscous slightly, bitter liquid used as a medicinal supplement in foods to aid digestion and in liquid vitamins. Widely used in hair products and emollients, and as a supplement in foods. It is good for human tissues.
Petrolatum 
- Vaseline. Petroleum Jelly. Paraffin Jelly. Used in cold creams, emollient creams, conditioning creams, wax depilatories, eyebrow pencils, eye shadows, liquid powders, lipsticks, protective creams, baby creams, and rouge. It is a purified mixture of semisolid hydrocarbons from petroleum. As a lubricant in lipsticks, it gives them a shine, and it makes creams smoother. Helps to soften and smooth the skin in the same way as any other emollient and is less expensive. The oily film helps prevent evaporation of moisture from the skin and protects the skin from irritation. A releasing additive and sealant for confections. A coating for fruits, cheese and vegetables. Used in baking products, as a lubricant in meatpacking plants, and used in dried egg albumin.
Phosphoric Acid 
- A colorless, odorless solution made from phosphate rock. Mixes with water and alcohol. A sequestering additive for rendered animal fat or a combination of such fat with vegetable fat. Also used as an acidulant and flavoring in soft drinks, jellies, frozen dairy products, bakery products, candy, cheese products, and in the brewing industry. Also, an antioxidant used in hair tonics, nail polishes, and skin fresheners.
Potassium Sorbate 
- Sorbic Acid Potassium Salt. White crystalline powder used as a preservative; a mold and yeast inhibitor; and a fungistat in beverages, bake goods, chocolate, soda fountain syrups, fresh fruit cocktail, salads, and cheeses.
Propylene Glycol 
- A clear, colorless, viscous liquid, slightly bitter tasting. In food, it is used in confectionery, chocolate products, ice cream emulsifiers, shredded coconut, beverages, baked goods, toppings, icings, and meat products to prevent discoloration during storage. Defoaming additive in processed beet sugar and yeast. Used in antifreeze in breweries and dairy establishments. It is the most common moisture-carrying vehicle other than water itself in cosmetics. It has better permeation through the skin than glycerin and is less expensive. Absorbs moisture, acts as a solvent and wetting ingredient. Used in a variety of cosmetic products such as creams, deodorants and shampoos. Safer glycols such as butylene and polyethylene glycols is soon going to replace the use of propylene glycol.
Protease (Enzyme) 
- A protein that dissolves stains caused by other proteins, such as grass and blood.
Quaternary Amine 
- Cationic surfactants used in fabric softeners.
Raspberry Puree 
- Puree from the fresh ripe fruit grown in Europe, Asia, the United States, and Canada. Used as a flavoring for lipsticks, food, and medicines.
Riboflavin 
- Vitamin B2. Riboflavin is a factor in the vitamin B complex and its used in emollients. Every plant and animal cell contains a minute amount. Good sources are milk, eggs, and organ meats. It is necessary for healthy skin and respiration, protects the eye from sensitivity to light, and is used for building and maintaining human body tissues. Its yellow to orange-yellow color is used to dye eggshells. It is permanently listed as a food color. Riboflavin and its more soluble form, riboflavin-5-phosphate, are added to dry baby cereals, poultry stuffing, peanut butter, enriched flour, macaroni, corn grits, breads and rolls.
Seaweed Extract 
- A group of sea plants that yield a gelatinlike substances.
Sesame Seed Oil 
- Oil has been used as a laxative and skin softener and contains elements active against lice. It is also used in hair conditioners.
Shea Butter 
- The natural fat obtained from the fruit of the karite tree, Butyrosperum parkii. Also called karite butter. It is widely used in moisturizers, sun tan gels and creams, cleansing products, indoor tanning preparations, hair conditioners, hair tonics, soap, and candies.
Sodium Benzoate 
- White, odorless powders or crystals; sweet antiseptic taste. Works best in slightly acid media. Used as preservative in margarine, codfish, bottles soft drinks, cherries, mincemeat, fruit juices, pickles, fruit jelly preserves, and jams. Also, used as preservative in eye creams. Once used medicinally for rheumatism and tonsillitis.
Sodium Bicarbonate 
- Bicarbonate of Soda. Baking Soda. Used in effervescent bath salts, mouthwashes, and skin-soothing powders. It is an alkali. Its white crystals or powders are used in baking powder as a gastric antacid, as an alkaline wash, and to treat burns. Specifically, it is used in prepared pancake, biscuit, and muffin mixes; a leavening additive in baking powders; in various crackers and cookies; to adjust acidity in tomato soup, ices, and sherbets; in pastes and beverages; in syrups for frozen products; and self-rising flours. Used also as a neutralizer for butter, cream milk and ice cream.
Sodium Carbonate
(Soda Ash, Washing Soda) 
- An alkaline salt used in detergent formuals as a water softener, that is, to remove calcium and magnesium ions from the water.
Sodium Chloride (Salt) 
- A neutral salt often used as a filler in powders, and as a viscosity builder in liquids.
Sodium Citrate 
- White, odorless crystals, granules, or powder with a cool salty taste. Stable in air. Prevents "cream plug" in cream and "feathering" when cream is used in coffee; an emulsifier in ice cream, processed cheese, and evaporated milk; a buffer to control acidity and retain carbonation in beverages, in frozen fruit drinks, fruit jellies, preserves, and jams. It attaches itself to trace metals present in water and inhibits their entering the living cell. Proposed as a replacement for phosphates in detergents, but also causes algae growth and removes the necessary trace metals from water as well as the toxic ones. Used as a sequestering additive to remove trace metals in solutions and as an alkalizer in cosmetic products.
Sodium Gluconate 
- A chelating agent (binds metals). Made by fermentation of glucose.
Sodium Hexametaphosphate 
- Graham’s Salt. An emulsifier, sequestering additive, and texturizer. Used in breakfast cereals, angel food cake, flaked fish, ice cream, ice milk, beer, bottled beverages, lemon juice, puddings, processes cheeses, and artificially sweetened jellies. Used in foods and potable water to prevent scale formation and corrosion. Because it keeps calcium, magnesium, and iron salts in solution, it is an excellent water softener and detergent. Also used in bath salts, bubble baths, and shampoos.
Sodium Hydroxide
(Caustic Soda, Lye) 
- Sodium hydroxide is used to adjust the alkalinity of detergent formulas. It is derived from the electrolysis of brine (sea water) as a co-product with chlorine. It can also be mined.
Sodium
Lauriminodipropionate 
- A surfactant derived from coconut or palm oil fatty acids.
Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate
(SLES) 
- A detergent, wetting additive, and emulsifier widely used in bubble baths, emollient creams, cream depilatories, hand lotions, soap less shampoos and toothpastes. It is used to treat raw foods, followed by a water rinsing. It is used as a whipping aid in cake mixes and dried-egg products. It is also used as a surfactant in fumaric acid-acidulated dry beverage base and fruit juice drinks unless precluded by food standards. May cause drying of the skin because of its degreasing ability, and is an irritant to the skin.

Sodium Percarbonate 
- Sodium Percarbonate is an addition compound of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide. It is a white crystalline water-soluble chemical compound. When used in detergent or bleach, it has strong stain removal capability. It is very effective as a laundry presoak for heavily stained articles. It is color safe and brightens colors and prevents fabric from becoming yellowed or darkened. Additionally, it is effective as a disinfectant on both bacteria and viruses. For its environmental advantages, sodium percarbonate is a good oxygen release chemical for agricultural applications.
Sodium Sesquicarbonate 
- A chemical mixture of equal parts of soda ash and sodium bicarbonate used to increase pH and total alkalinity.
Sodium Silicate 
- A salt used to provide alkalinity, soil suspension, and prevent wear of metal parts in washing machines and automatic dish washers.
Sodium Sulfate 
- A salt used as a filler and to promote flow in laundry powders and automatic dishwasher powders.
Sorbic Acid 
- A natural preservative used to inhibit molds, yeasts, and fungi in many foods, cosmetics, and household cleaning products. Made by the oxidation of sorbitol.
Sorbitol 
- A humectant. Gives a velvety feel to skin. Used as a replacement for glycerin in emulsions, ointments, embalming fluid, mouthwashes, dental creams and various cosmetic creams. A binder for toilet preparations and a plasticizer and a flavoring ingredient. Also used in hairsprays, beauty masks, cuticle removers, after-shave lotions, and shampoos. First found in the ripe berries of the mountain ash; it also occurs in other berries (except grapes), and in cherries plums, pears, apples, seaweed, and algae. It is a teturizing ingredient and a sequesterant. Also used in antifreeze, in foods as a sugar substitute, in writing inks to ensure a smooth flow from the point of the pen, and to increase the absorption of vitamins in pharmaceutical preparations. Medicinally used to reduce body water and for intravenous feedings.
Soy Methyl Esters 
- Soybean-derived substances used as solvents, degreasers, lubricants, and for numerous other applications.
Soybean Oil 
- Oil extracted from soybeans.
Spearmint Oil 
- Used in perfumes, perfumed cosmetics, and toothpaste. It is the essential volatile oil obtained by steam distillation from the fresh above-ground parts of the flowering plant grown in the United State, Europe and Asia. It is colorless, yellow or yellow-green, with the characteristic taste and odor of spearmint. Also used as a flavoring ingredient in food.
Spruce Oil 
- The essential oils derived from the spruce tree.
Stearic Acid 
- Widely used in deodorants and antiperspirants, liquid powders, foundation creams, hand creams, hand lotions, hair strengtheners, protective creams, shaving creams and soap. Occurs naturally in butter acids, tallow, cascarilla bark, and other animal fats and oils. A white, waxy, natural fatty acid, it is the major ingredient used in making bar soap and lubricants. A large percentage of all cosmetic creams on the market contain it. It gives pearliness to hand creams. It is also used as a softener in chewing gum base, for suppositories and as a food flavoring, such as vanilla flavorings for beverages, baked goods and candy.
Stearyl Alcohol 
- Stenol. A mixture of solid alcohols prepared from sperm whale oil. White flakes, insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and ether. Used as a coating additive, emulsifier, lubricant, solvent and texturing additive in baked goods, cake, desserts, fruits, ice cream, nuts, puddings, peanut butter. A substitute for cetyl alcohol to obtain a firmer product at ordinary temperatures.
Strawberry Puree 
- Fresh, ripe strawberries are reputed to contain ingredients that soften and nourish the skin. Widely used in natural cosmetics today.
Tall Oil Fatty Acid 
- Fatty acids isolated from the resinous oil of trees.
Tea Tree Oil 
- The essential oils derived from the tea tree (melaleuca).
Vanilla Oil 
- The essential oils derived from the vanilla bean.
Vanillin 
- Used in perfumes. Occurs naturally in vanilla and potato pairings but it is an artificial flavoring and scent made synthetically from eugenol; also from the waste of the wood pulp industry. Used in butter, chocholate, fruit, root beer, and vanilla flavorings for beverages, ice creams, ices, candy, gelatin desserts, and liqueurs.
Vitamin A 
- Acetate and Palmitate. A yellow viscous liquid insoluble in water. An anti-infective, anti-erophthahnic vitamin, essential for growth and development. It is used to fortify mellorine (vegetable-fat imitation ice cream), skin milk, dietary infant formula, blue cheese, Gorgonzola cheese, and milk. Vitamin A is also used in lubricating creams and oils for its alleged skin-healing properties. It can be absorbed through the skin.
Vitamin E 
- Tocopherols. Obtained by the vacuum distillation of edible vegetable oils. Protects fat in body’s tissues from abnormal breakdown. Experimental evidence shows Vitamin E may protect the heart and blood vessels and retard aging. Used as a dietary supplement and as an antioxidant for essential oils, rendered animal fats, or a combination of such fats with vegetable oils. Widely used in deodorants and hair-grooming aids. Helps form normal red blood cells, muscle and other tissues.
White Cedar Leaf Oil 
- Oil of Arborvitae. Stable, pale yellow volatile oil obtained by steam distillation from the fresh leaves and branch ends of the eastern arborvitae. Has a strong camphoraceous and sagelike scent. Used as a perfume and scent for soaps and room sprays. Also used as a flavoring ingredient. Soluble in most fixed oils.
Witch Hazel 
- One of the most widely used cosmetic ingredients, it is a skin freshener, local anesthetic, and astringent made from the leaves and/or twigs of Hamamelis virginana. Collected in the autumn. Witch hazel has an ethanol content of 70 to 80 percent and a tannin content of 2 to 9 percent.
Xanthan Gum 
- A gum produced by a pure culture fermentation of a carbohydrate with Xanthomanos campestris. Also called corn sugar gum. Widely used as a thickener, an emulsifier, and used to stabilize water-based foods, such as dairy products and salad dressings. It is also used as “pseudo plasticizer” in salad dressings to help them pour well. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has asked for the use of xanthan gum as a necessary ingredient in packaging meat and poultry products.
Zeolites 
- An inert, insoluble aluminum silicate (processed clay), that binds metals to soften water. Used as a replacement for phosphates.
