Nonylphenol ethoxylates, or NPEs, such as NP-9, are common, man-made surfactants found in many household, industrial and institutional cleaning products. Unfortunately, NPEs and their breakdown products (i.e., nonylphenol) are harmful to human health and the environment and, as such, have been banned in the European Union.
