Global Household Green Cleaning Products Market to Reach US$9.32 Billion by 2017
The global market for household green cleaning products is forecast to reach US$9.32 billion by the year 2017, driven by the growing eco-consciousness and health concerns among consumers worldwide. Stringent government legislations mandating the reduction of ecological impact of cleaning products and services, is providing an impetus to the green cleaners market. Despite economic recession, the industry displayed healthy growth in mature markets of North America and Western Europe, and is primed to surge in emerging markets including Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe and Latin America. However, regardless of bright growth prospects, lack of consumer awareness, premium pricing, fraudulent green clean claims, and fierce competition from conventional cleaning products tend to mar immediate market penetration and acceptance.
The US and Europe represent two of the most dominant markets for household green cleaning product s worldwide, as stated by the new research report on Household Green Cleaning Products. Asia Pacific constituting a modest share of the global market is ranked among the most promising markets, led by burgeoning regional markets of India, China, Australia, Hong Kong and Korea among others. The market is slated to surge ahead at the overall fastest compounded growth rate of about 25% through 2017. By product category, General Household Cleaners captures a sizeable chunk of the ma rket. Laundry cleaning products are projected to show vast potential in the future, racing ahead at an impressive growth rate of 24% through 2017.

EPA Launches Green Products Web Portal for Pollution Prevention Week
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is observing Pollution Prevention (P2) Week (September 19-25, 2011) by launching a new tool designed to provide Americans easy access to information about everyday products like home appliances, electronics and cleaning products that can save money, prevent pollution and protect people’s health. The new green products web portal is available at www.epa.gov/greenerproducts.
This week serves to recognize significant pollution prevention work around the country and help consumers get involved in pollution prevention. EPA’s new green products web portal is an easy way for all Americans to learn about products that prevent pollution and protect our environment.
Using the new tool, consumers can find electronics and appliances that have earned EPA’s Energy Star label and can browse WaterSense products that help save energy and water. Additionally, consumers can find information about cleaning products that are safer for the environment and people’s health. These products bear the EPA Design for the Environment (DfE) label. The website will also help manufacturers and institutional purchasers with information on standards and criteria for designing greener products.
"By purchasing greener products, consumers can help reduce air pollution, conserve water and energy, minimize waste and protect their children and families from exposure to toxic chemicals, while also creating green jobs,” said Steve Owens, assistant administrator of EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, “Pollution Prevention is good for our health, our environment and our economy."
Join the EPA in marking P2 Week this week, and help prevent pollution every day. More information on pollution prevention, P2 Week, and EPA’s P2 programs: epa.gov/p2/

Reducing Phosphates - Cleaner for the Environment, Not for the Dishes
The NY Times recently reported on major changes in the dishwasher detergent product segment. Following new laws, laundry detergents and handsoaps experienced a reduction of the harmful impact of phosphates from 8.7% to only 0.5%. While this change is crucial in protecting the environment, more specifically, bodies of freshwater, it has been reported that the overall effectiveness of these detergents have decreased.
For example, after strong consumer complaints, Procter & Gamble's Cascade revised its formulation by adding several other ingredients in order to achieve better results. Afterwards, Cascade and other detergents faced a Consumer Report test lab which yielded varying results.
To justify some quality shortcomings, the report mentions how hospitals and medical centers that swapped to greener cleaners experienced a total reduction of lost work days due to health effects or injury from traditional cleaners.

Personal Care Ingredients Market in the United States Forecast to Grow at a CAGR of 2.2% through 2014, According to Kline
LITTLE FALLS, NJ, AUGUST 24, 2010 – Demand for personal care ingredients in the United States is driven by a stable consumption of personal care products, and increased consumer awareness of products with skin protection benefits such as anti-aging and sun care. The market posted 3% growth since 2005, and is forecast to grow further at a CAGR of 2.2% through 2014 according recently released study Global Personal Care Ingredients 2010: Market Analysis and Opportunities, by worldwide consulting and research firm Kline & Company.
The total market for personal care ingredients in the United States is estimated at 355 million lb in 2009. It is the second largest market for personal care ingredients behind Europe. Conditioning polymers are the leading product category followed by surfactants constituting a market share of about 32% and 23%, respectively, by volume. Alkyl polyglucosides (APG) or so-called “green” surfactants that are plant-derived augmented by increasing environmental awareness and consumer demand exceeded the growth of traditional surfactants by over 2% in 2009.
Spurred by growing consumer awareness, the natural personal care end product market has persevered through the recession registering a healthy 8% sales gain in 2009 in the United States. Natural ingredients benefited from a strong demand for natural products, capturing a small but increasing growth in their sector. “Although there is still perceived issue with performance of natural ingredients prohibiting their usage in many formulations,” notes Anna Ibbotson, Industry Manager, Chemicals & Material practice at Kline,” the opportunities for growth surpass those more traditional ingredients, creating a forum for innovation.”

NACD Launches a Dynamic New Branding Initiative
National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) is launching dynamic new brand identities for both the NACD and for the association’s bellwether safety and best practices initiative, Responsible Distribution.
The branding revamps are accompanied by a revised NACD website, new collateral and publication materials, and a fresh new look for the association’s magazine, Chemical Distributor.
Established in 1971, NACD is an international association of chemical distributor companies that purchase and take title of chemical products from manufacturers. Member companies process, formulate, blend, re-package, warehouse, transport, and market these chemical products for an industrial customer base of approximately 750,000.
The new branding debuted exclusively to the NACD’s membership at the association’s OPSEM conference being held August 18-20 in Austin, Texas.
The new tagline which accompanies the new logo: "Advancing Stewardship, Creating Connections." Using the visual grammar of linking “molecules,” the logo symbolizes the strength, modernity and constructive connections between members that the NACD has come to stand for over the years.
The new Responsible Distribution logo was designed to be readily visible at every stage of the chemical distribution process chain. Members and Chemical Handler Affiliates who pass a third-party verification process will be permitted and encouraged to use this new mark.

EPA to Take Action on Chemicals Used in Dyes, Flame Retardants, and Industrial Detergents
Efforts to limit exposure and reduce harm to people
WASHINGTON – As part of Administrator Lisa P. Jackson’s commitment to strengthen and reform chemical management, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released action plans today to address the potential health risks of benzidine dyes, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and nonylphenol (NP)/nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs). The chemicals are widely used in both consumer and industrial applications, including dyes, flame retardants, and industrial laundry detergents. The plans identify a range of actions the agency is considering under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
"The action plans announced today are examples of EPA's renewed dedication to improve chemical safety to protect the health of the American people and the environment.” said Steve Owens, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. “These action plans lay out concrete steps EPA intends to take to address the risks associated with chemicals commonly used in this country."
Benzidine dyes are carcinogenic, used in the production of consumer textiles, paints, printing inks, paper, and pharmaceuticals. HBCD is used as a flame retardant in expanded polystyrene foam in the building and construction industry, as well as in some consumer products. NP/NPEs are used in many industrial applications and consumer products such as detergents, cleaners, agricultural and indoor pesticides, as well as food packaging. EPA’s new Chemicals of Concern list, issuing significant new use rules for all three chemicals, and potentially banning or limiting the manufacture or use of the chemicals.
In addition to EPA’s efforts, the Textile Rental Services Association, has committed to voluntarily phase out the use of NPEs in industrial liquid detergents by 2013 and industrial powder detergents by the end of 2014.
